Movie Review

The Thing (2011) dir. Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. — 5.3

This is a remake of the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell classic of the same name, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. The 1982 version was itself a remake of the James Arness 1951 original. So why make it for a third time? No clue. It's not that this version is bad, it's just inert. The CGI is nowhere as cool or scary as the original Rob Bottin effects, and they reproduce most of 1982 verbatim. There really is just no reason for this movie to exist. And the ending in the spaceship (which 1982 wisely avoided) blows.

And, Twitter too… Also on Facebook

“Does he drool?
I don’t think so.
Does he eat glue?
Not that I’ve seen.
Does he frequently sniff his fingertips?
Actually, now that you mention it…
Let’s test him.”
