Movie Review

Revolutionary Road dir. Sam Mendes — 6.0

An impossible book to make a movie from that does a fair job anyway. It looks good and the acting is fine. It's just that the movie never begins to scratch the underlying motivations of any of the characters in even a fraction of the way the book does. They would have been better off scrapping half of the lovingly re-created scenes and trying a lot harder to put real dialog into Kate and Leo's mouth instead of having them yelling at each other all the time. Mendes relies on the viewer to supply their own cliche'd "suburbia blues" subtext that the book is so brilliant in moving beyond.
