Rescue Dawn dir. Werner Herzog — 6.6

A sort of by-the-numbers true story of a Vietnam POW and his grueling escape through the jungle. It's always interesting and the verisimilitude is on the money, but it mostly feels like a vehicle for Christian Bale to do the starvation/leeches/maggot-eating Oscar thing, showcasing all his actorly intensity in bursts of emotional withholding and sublimated hope. Steve Zahn plays a supporting role as The Beard Without The Requisite Survival Instinct.

“I ran down the hall. And stopped in front of the counselor’s office. There was nothing there. Not even a door, just bricks. I could swear there used to be a door.”
