Please Give dir. Nicole Holofcener — 6.7
Nicole Holofcener has her own style that hasn't varied much with this film, her latest. Catherine Keener does her usual muted walk through of the material, embodying a variation of Catherine Keener instead of playing a role. It works better some times than others. Amanda Peet sleeping with Oliver Platt is a bit of a stretch. The dialog is smart and the scenes mostly calm and reflective. It's a meditation on old age, buying and selling, marriage, and the value of being kind vs. being mean. All very expected, but not unpleasant.
