As a long-time resident of SF, I was familiar with a lot of this history, but it was incredibly interesting at points to see it re-created and fill in the gaps. Penn is either fantastic or cloying as Harvey Milk, I couldn't make up my mind. If there can be one reason for this film to exist above all others, it's to make you realize, in the outlandish prejudice and injustice of the era depicted, how little has truly changed.
