Movie Review

An Education dir. Lone Scherfig — 7.5

I enjoyed this coming-of-age small time crime story. The crushing clausterphobia of sixties English society is well-recreated and the acting is good. Mostly, though, Carey Mulligan is great in her role of the girl being wooed. In fact, I don't think this movie works without her. Pretty but not tediously gorgeous, beautiful because of her laugh and smile and rebellious intelligence instead of her legs and rack. Perfect casting.

“My name’s Stan. So right there I was more or less doomed from the beginning. You don’t think so? Ever heard of a movie star named Stan?”
