Movie Review

Big Fan dir. Robert Siegel — 6.2

A crushingly depressing indie about the sort of zero-life sports obsessive that has become more or less shorthand carticature for a large segment of blue collar American males. Beer, face painting, pudgy white worship of sculped black athletes, sports radio, dead end jobs, living with mom, masturbating, horrible manipulative brother, sweet but even dumber best friend, and a conclusion with a gun. It's all there. And, of course, psychotic level allegience to a particular team, in this case the NY Giants. In some ways, the script, written by the same guy who wrote The Wrestler, is smarter than expected, but it's also mining obvious territory and offers no real analysis or insight. Painful to watch.

“I ran down the hall. And stopped in front of the counselor’s office. There was nothing there. Not even a door, just bricks. I could swear there used to be a door.”
