Going Nowhere Faster

Did I win the Opium Magazine memoir contest judged by Tom Perrotta for which I had been recently selected a finalist?

Ah, no.

Did I immediately track Perrotta down on Facebook and tell him that not only had I not bothered to read  Little Children, I thought the movie pretty much sucked ass?

No, I didn't do that either. Instead, I meekly accepted Opium's consolation prize of printing my piece on their website (In their print volume, you ask? Nope, on the website)

Man, I knew I wasn't going to win. I never win. Once, when I was little my parents took my sister and I to some sort of country carnival, the sort of thing where they sell Pennsylvania Fried Dough and there's pigs on spits and sack races and we entered some raffle and my sister, of course, won. I was furious. Even at eight years old I was already doomed to be one step away from the glory. On the other hand, my sister's prize was (this is completely true) a ten pound can of Maxwell House Coffee.

Well, at least they're printing your story. When I submitted a story to them, all I got back was an email that simply said, "Ha-ha-ha-ha. No thanks."
